Is It Spring Yet?

So it’s come to this.

After much discussion and reflection on Saturday, I decided to take a full six months off of running. I won’t lie, there were more than a few tears shed over this decision, but I had to be honest with myself and recognize that my body has been trying to tell me something for months. Injuries as severe and frequent as I’ve been experiencing since the beginning of the year indicate an issue and I think that issue is that I’ve never truly let myself heal before getting back on the road.

I’m taking some comfort in the fact that winter is just around the corner which is the time I normally switch to the treadmill because I’m a princess and won’t run in sub zero weather. Like most runners, I hate the treadmill with a passion so at least I won’t have to deal with it this winter. I’ve also made myself a secret promise. I haven’t even told Ian this, although he reads my blog (hi luv!) so he’ll know in about thirty seconds. To keep me honest over the next six months, I’ve decided that come the spring I’m going to start training for a marathon. It’s something that’s on my bucket list and what better motivation for getting back to 100% than crossing that off?

So now that I can’t run, I will be doubling down in the gym because that’s just what I do. I created a new work-out plan for this week which I’m tweaking as I finish each session . I’ll probably post the final version on the weekend so check it out if you’re looking to spice up your gym routine.

Oh and I’ve signed up for swimming lessons. Yes, you read that right. This woman doesn’t swim. I have a huge phobia thanks to being held under the water when I was a kid (ironically at swimming lessons) so the first class on September 30th should be interesting. Question: you can’t actually learn to swim unless you get in the pool, correct?

And there’s always yoga. My gym has a couple classes a week which I’ve never taken advantage of. Maybe this is a good opportunity for me to get my “om” on. My theory being that between the gym, the pool and a weekly yoga session or two I should be busy enough that I don’t miss running.

Yeah, right.
