Get in my belly!

September 25, 2013

Let’s talk cravings. I’ve had some weird ones lately.

Tinned sardines for example. Who craves sardines in those little tins other than pregnant women? Anyway, I checked the all knowing internet and apparently I’m low in either calcium or iron. I take calcium supplements so I’m blaming iron and plan to have a HUGE steak at some point this weekend. I guess I could just eat the sardines, but what would you rather have? Sardines from a tin or a nice rare steak?

Oh and (please don’t judge me) – Kraft Dinner. What is that?! Other than one bowl of gnocchi that was so good I swear I needed a cigarette when I was done eating it, I haven’t eaten pasta in more than two years. Which makes it even more bizarre that I’m not craving the fresh made stuff with homemade sauce and real Parmesan cheese (although maybe NOW I am – ha!), but junk food pasta instead. Looked that one up too and shockingly, it seems that particular craving has no nutritional basis. Blaming it on the inner junk food lover who pipes up every now and then despite my best efforts to quiet her with vegetables.

Ravi Soup. If you live in Toronto, you know exactly what I’m talking about. I could eat at Ravi Soup every day. Trust me, if you haven’t been to Ravi, go there, order the Ravi stew and thank me later. Also, the cheddar biscuit. Sure I don’t generally eat bread, but I make the odd exception. See also: pizza, Jacob & Co popovers, banana bread and cake.

Last but not least, I’ve had a wicked craving for various nut/seed butters. We usually have an all-natural jar of either peanut or almond butter in the house along with the occasional seed butter. Had to stop buying them though because I was eating it by the spoonful right out of the jar. Yes I know – good fats and all, but at a 100 calories a tablespoon, the damage adds up pretty quickly. Anyway, I discovered this great new product called PB2. It’s powdered peanut butter. The nuts are dry-roasted then all the oils and fats are sucked out of them. What’s left is 45 calories, 1.5 grams of fat and 5 grams of protein per TWO tablespoons. Brilliant! Had a half spoonful tonight and it’s so concentrated I was immediately satisfied. It’s going into the protein shake tomorrow morning too. I am going to peanut butter my world!

What do you crave? Have you found a way to beat them or indulge in a healthier way? Share in the comments!
