At Rest

I hate the night before my rest day. Usually before bed I’ll lay out my gym stuff and put my keys and water bottle on the kitchen counter so when I get up in the morning I can just throw my clothes on and go. The less time spent thinking and looking for things the better.

The night before my rest day though, I don’t have that comforting routine. Instead I end up thinking about what I did in the gym this week, what’s working and what’s not and what I can tweak. I try to think of excuses to go to the gym in the morning anyway, knowing full well it’s important to give my body at least one day a week to recuperate. I’ll bargain with myself: “I’ll just run for half an hour.” “I’ll just do a couple of kettlebell circuits or some 55s.”

In short, I obssess. And I do it because I truly love working out. There will always be a part of me that just doesn’t understand how people can hate running / spinning / whatever or find going to the gym to be chore. But then there are those who love things I don’t really get either so to each their own I guess. All I know is that when I’m on the road or in the gym it feels like I’m doing exactly what I’m supposed to be doing. What I wouldn’t give to be able to skip those rest days (more often than I already do).
