The Little Things

February 14, 2014

Happy Valentine’s Day friends! V-day isn’t something Ian and I typically make a big deal out of, but it’s always nice to have an excuse to do something for that special someone. Ian sent a beautiful bouquet of flowers to my office. Not roses thank goodness, but my favourites (cala lillies) and some other pretty ones. I picked Ian up a bunch of treats from the local chocolate shop since he is a total chocoaholic…plus I know he’ll share with me so it’s a win-win!

We’re rounding out the day with take-out from a neighbourhood BBQ joint and a Hitchcock flick because nothing says romance like smoked meat and classic movies! Maybe we can lick the sauce off each other’s fingers while we watch tv? That might have bordered on TMI…sorry (not sorry).

But that’s what I love about our relationship. There aren’t a lot of big, stereotypical romantic gestures because neither of us is into that. What there is are a whole lot of little things that add up to making the other person feel valued and loved no matter what day it is. It’s him driving me to work when it’s cold even though my office is only 2.5K away. It’s me knowing he loves a fresh towel when he gets out of shower and grabbing him one when I hear the water stop. It’s the support, encouragement, the laughter and the shoulder to lean on. I wouldn’t trade any of that for all those flash-mob declarations of love that seem to be popular these days. Who needs a Youtube video when you have Alfred Hitchcock to watch together?
