Sugar

March 28, 2014

Went into work this morning still riding the high from last night’s recruitment event. Getting out and meeting people is one of my favourite parts of the job and when you work for a company you genuinely love, it’s easy to tell everyone why they should join the team. Waiting for me on my desk was a bag of treats from the local organic/free trade chocolate maker from someone I recently hired. Perfect example of why I love working for FreshBooks…little thoughtful things like this are completely commonplace yet always still appreciated.

All that being said, it is a place that can test the strongest willpower. Our kitchen is well stocked with breakfast foods, snacks, drinks and there is always a lunch or cake for a various celebrations. I’ve definitely noticed my sugar cravings slowly creeping up since I joined back in December and I’m starting to have “treats” a few times a week instead of just once. Sadly, this can’t continue forever so I’m putting a stop to it and starting the Whole 30 on Monday to reset my system.  I did it years ago and outside of  consuming quinoa and dairy products on the regular and sweet stuff occasionally, I have pretty much stuck with it until recently. You might think I’d be dreading the start of it, but I’m actually looking forward to being rid of the sugar highs and crashes. A friend used to call it riding the white dragon and I can’t think of a better descriptor.

Anyway, I’ll be blogging about my progress and the effect it’s having on my performance in the gym and on the road. I’ll also post some Whole 30 approved recipes so check them out if you’re interested in detoxing from sugar with me.

I’ll say this much, I’m going to miss chocolate. And Coke Zero. And Oreos. Damn it!
