Whole 30 Update

April 22, 2014

Well I’m in the last week of the Whole 30 and I have to say that it’s been a resounding success. It was exactly what I needed to remind myself that eating clean 98% of the time is the way to go. I’m sleeping better, waking up with energy before my alarm (not always a good thing – hello 4am!) and my moods and energy levels have completely stabilized. I’m so happy to be back in a state of disinterest when it comes to junk food rather than feeling like I’m constantly fighting temptation.

A couple of things I noticed this month:

  1. Most of what I cook is Whole 30 friendly, so if you’re trying it and looking for meal ideas, check out the recipes section. Other than baking, I don’t use much in the way of sweeteners, so go nuts!
  2. I also noticed that increasing the amount of sweet potato I eat from once or twice a week to several times really helped with energy levels and cravings. The Whole 30 is a fairly low carb plan and without those sweet potatoes I wasn’t able to work out with my usual intensity.  If you’re thinking of trying it, I highly recommend using them as an alternative carb source since you won’t be getting any from grains, beans etc.

Although this weekend marks the final days of the Whole 30 for me, the transition back to “normal” eating won’t be a big one. Cheese, quinoa and corn have never bothered me and will be added back into my diet in small quantities. I know what my triggers are (added sugar and dried fruit) and what my body reacts badly to (sugar and most grains) so I’ll continue to avoid them for the most part.  And office cupcakes, brownies and pastries are completely off the list! The office Coke Zero on the other hand….well I can’t make any promises.
