49 and Counting

April 24, 2014

Today is my parents’ 49th wedding anniversary. FORTY-NINE YEARS. It boggles the mind.

A couple of years ago I asked my dad how they did it. He said you had to enjoy the good times, have faith that the bad times wouldn’t last and never consider divorce an option. I pushed him a little and asked how they knew that the bad times would end and things would get good again. How long do you wait? How long do you try? To my folks, there was no time limit. There was no “enough”. You just kept trying until things were right again because even if that took a year or two, in a marriage of almost 50 years, it was a blip on the radar.

I watch my folks together and see how they take care of each other. My dad is protective of my mum (much to her chagrin) and mum fusses over my dad and his less than optimal eating habits. They still hold hands, they bicker like the old married couple they are and they love each other completely. They are true partners in life because they never gave up.

Ian and I are getting married later this year. We’ve been together a long time and have been through some pretty major life events. There have been a couple of times when we walked away for a bit but we came back together. On some level we had that faith that things would get better and we would be stronger for it. I look to my parents as amazing relationship role models and am so thankful that they’ve been there to show me what love and partnership means. I know that our marriage will be successful in part because of their example.

Happy Anniversary mum and dad!
