Turkey Sweet Potato Burgers

It’s that time of year when it seems like burgers are almost always an option for dinner. Of course those traditional ground beef patties (especially the kind that come from a box) are not the healthiest of choices , so I’ve come up with a few alternatives. I’ll post them over the next few days so you can enjoy your bbq knowing you’re being good to your body.

First up is the turkey sweet potato burger. Swapping out the ground beef for turkey (or chicken) saves you a whole lot of calories and saturated fat. And we all know how much I love sweet potato for the fibre and low glycemic index.  Throw in some kale and flax and you have yourself a nutrition packed patty.

Ingredients (serves four)

  • 1 lb ground turkey (or chicken if you prefer)
  • 1 or 2 cloves of garlic, diced
  • 1 cup chopped onion
  • 1 cup chopped kale
  • 1 cup cooked sweet potato, mashed (keep it somewhat chunky)
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tbsp flax meal
  • 1 tbsp EVOO + pinch extra for cooking
  • 1 tsp ginger
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Turn on your bbq or grill to medium heat.

Heat a bit of EVOO in a frying pan then add the onion and garlic, stirring while they get soft and fragrant. Add in the kale and cook for a couple more minutes until it’s well wilted. Remove from heat and set aside.

In a bowl, whisk together the gg, flax meal and ginger. Add the meat, sweet potato and onion/kale mixture and use your hands to combine. Feel free to add in salt and pepper if desired. Once you have it mixed, portion out four balls and flatten into four reasonaly same size patties. Put them on the grill for about five or six minutes a side and BOOM! You’re done!

I personally like these with a bit of spinach and either homemade bbq sauce or tatziki (or both!).  A big green salad on the side and you are set. Enjoy!
